Hindi, like its sister language Urdu, is a standardized register of the Hindustani language. With an estimated 500 million speakers Hindi is one of the most spoken languages in the world and today it acts as a lingua franca in India. Its unique writing system is called Devanagari, which is also used in Nepali, and Hindi itself is mostly derived from the ancient and holy language Sanskrit. There is still on-going debate in India about the role that Hindi should play on the national level but anyone wanting to learn one language to help communicate with locals in India should choose Hindi. Moreover, with the massive growth witnessed in India, it is likely Hindi will continue to grow in influence both inside and outside the country.
